Fast Ramadhan with belief and truly seeking the reward of Allah the Most High so that He may forgive you your past sins.

2. Beware of breaking your fast during the days of Ramadhan without a valid Islamic excuse, for it is from the greatest of sins.

3. Pray Salat ut-Taraweeh and the night prayer during the nights of Ramadhan - especially on Layatul-Qadr - based on belief and truly seeking the reward of Allah, so that Allah may forgive you your past sins.

4. Make sure that your food, your drink and your clothing are from halal means, in order that your actions be accepted, and your supplications answered. Beware of refraining from the halal while fasting and breaking your fast with the haram.

5. Give food to some fasting people to gain a reward similar to theirs.

6. Perform your five prayers on time in congregation to gain the reward and Allah's protection.

7. Give a lot of charity for the best charity is that of Ramadhan.

8. Beware of spending your time without performing righteous deeds, for you will be responsible and reckoned for it and will be rewarded for all you do during your time.

9. Perform `umrah in Ramadhan for `Umrah in Ramadhan is equal to Hajj.

10. Seek help for fasting during the day by eating the sahoor meal in the last part of the night before the appearance of Fajr.

11. Hasten breaking your fast after the sun has truly set in order to gain the love of Allah.

12. Perform ghusl before fajr if you need to purify yourself from the state of major impurity so that you are able to do acts of worship in a state of purity and cleanliness.

13. Cease the opportunity of being in Ramadhan and spend it with the good that has been revealed in it - by reciting the noble Qur'an and pondering and reflection of its meanings so that it be a proof for you with your Lord and an intercessor for you on the Day of Reckoning.

14. Preserve your tongue from lying, cursing, backbiting and slander for it decreases the reward of fasting.

15. Do not let fasting cause you cross your boundaries by getting upset due to the slightest of reasons. Rather, fating should be a cause of peacefulness and tranquility of your soul.

16. Upon completion of fasting, be in a state of taqwa of Allah the Most High, being aware of Allah watching you in secret and in public, in thankfulness for His favors, and steadfastness upon obedience of Allah by doing all what He has ordered and shunning all that He has prohibited.

17. Increase in remembrance of Allah, seeking of forgiveness, asking for Paradise and protection against the Fire, especially when fasting, while breaking the fast and during suhoor, for these actions are among greatest causes of attaining Allah's forgiveness.

18. Increase in supplication for yourself, your parents, your children and Muslims, for Allah has ordered making of supplications and has guaranteed acceptance.

19. Repent to Allah with a sincere repentance in all times by leaving sins, regretting those that you have done before and firmly deciding not to return to them in the future, for Allah accepts repentance of those who repent.

20. Fast six days of Shawwal, for whoever fasts Ramadhan and then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasts all the time.

21. Fast on the Day of `Arafah, the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, to attain success by being forgiven your sins of the last year and the coming year.

22. Fast on the day of `Aashuraa', the 10th of Muharram, along with the 9th, to attain success by being forgiven your sins of the past year.

23. Continue being in a state of iman and taqwa and perform righteous actions after the month of Ramadhan, until you die. "And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (i.e. death)". [Qur'an 15:99]

24. Ensure that you attain the positive effects of your acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, zakat and hajj, sincere repentance and leaving of customs that are in variance with the Sharee`ah.

25. Invoke a lot of salawat and salam upon the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, his Companions and all those who follow them until the Day of Judgment.

* Allah make us and all Muslims of those who fast and stand in prayer during the month of Ramadhan based on belief and truly seeking Your reward so that we are forgiven our past and future sins.
* Allah make us of those who fasted the month, attained full reward, witnessed Layatul-Qadr and attained success by permission of the Lord, Blessed and Most High.

* Allah, verily you are Forgiver, like to forgive, so forgive us.

* Lord, accept from us, verily you are the All-Hearing, all-Seeing, * Living, * Independent, * Owner of all majesty and honor.

And may Allah's blessings and peace be upon Muhammad, his family and his Companions.

Source: apnicommunity.com

Ramadan - Are You Ready?

Ramadan - Are You Ready?

We are standing at the doors of Ramadan.

We need to prepare, and go into Ramadan with preparation (just like we prepare for everything else), we must know what is Ramadan and what to do in Ramadan.

Many Muslims do not get to see the next Ramadan.

The Prophet Muhammad (s) and his companions used to make duaa “O Allah, make it such that we arrive to Ramadan” - Hadith

The early Muslims would anxiously wait for Ramadan, why? Because we were made to worship Allah

And I (Allâh) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). The Noble Qur’an - Az-Zaariyaat 51:56

It clear that the true purpose of our duniya is to worship Allah, and we should rush to do good deeds until we meet Him.

“Race with one another in hastening towards forgiveness from your Lord, and Paradise the width whereof is as the width of the heaven and the earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His Messengers. That is the Grace of Allah, which He bestows on whom He is pleased with. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty”. (57:21)

Allah has made some times more profitable than other times, and some times more important than other times. Ramadan is the best of ALL MONTHS, a time where we can gather more deeds, the same deed outside of Ramadan we can get more reward when doing it in Ramadan.

Some of the things we can do in Ramadan, inshaAllah will list 10 practical things:
1 ) Ikhlas - this is the most important thing in the whole religion of Islam

“And they have been commanded no more than to worship Allah, offering Him sincere devotion.” (Al-Qur’an, 98:5)

All worship is to be done for Allah alone.

The Commander of the Faithful, `Umar b. al-Khattâb, relates that he heard Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) say: “Actions are but by intentions and every man will have only what he intended. So whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration was for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever emigrated to attain something of this world or to marry a woman, then his emigration was for whatever reason he emigrated.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî and Sahîh Muslim]

We should not be fasting because we are Pakistani, or Arab, or to fast to loose weight. This is not the real intention, the intention should be that we are worshipping Allah alone, siyaam is an act of worship.

The Ulamah wrote a lot of Ikhlas, and say every action in Islam has 2 pillars without exception, first being it must be done solely for Allah (ikhlas) and second that the Prophet Muhammad (s) must be followed.

Before Ramadan we must ask ourselves why are fasting Ramadan? Are fasting merely because our forefathers did?
2 ) Knowledge - everything in Islam is founded on knowledge

Just like in the duniya there are rules and regulations, similarly there are many forms of worship in Islam that have rules and regulations, we must be aware of them. Many people make mistakes during Ramadan, and say “Allah will forgive me”, Islam is not based on “Allah will forgive me” or “I think we should do this and that” rather Islam is based on pure knowledge.

Every Muslim must learn the rulings of Ramadan, and familiarise our self with knowledge and make effort.
3 ) The Qur’aan

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan), he must fast that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number (of days which one did not fast must be made up) from other days.

Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him” (2: 185).

Does this mean that a book came flying out of the sky and landed in the hands of the Prophet Muhammad (s)?! The whole Quran was not revealed in this month, the Quran was revealed over a period of 23 years. There is much wisdom behind this, however the most important point is that it was revealed in this month, meaning it came from the Preserved Tablet to the lower Heavens.

To appreciate the Quran: we must understand that Ramadan is the best of all months and once we have understood this point, to know the best of days of Ramadan are the last 10 days, and then to know from these 10 days the best night is Laylatul Qadr and the Quran was lowered from the Preserved Tablet to the Lower Heavens; a night which is worth 1,000 months. If we understand this, we would realise how great this book is.

On the day of judgment, people will be given their book of deeds, some in their right hand, some in their left and some from behind their back.

“As for him who is given his book in his right hand, he shall surely receive an easy reckoning and he will return to his family rejoicing. But as for him who is given his book behind his back, he shall call for destruction on himself and will burn in a blazing fire” (84:7-12)

Many of us have placed the Quran behind our backs, and have lost our connection with it.

The Messenger (s) said: “And the Qur’an is a proof for you or against you.” [Muslim]

Many of Muslims treat the Quran, as a book of blessings with in no doubt it is full of blessings.

“Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” [At-Tirmithee]

However, the Quran did not come just for blessings, it came for guidance.

“The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Quran was sent down, a guidance for mankind, clear proofs for the guidance, the Criterion; so whoever amongst you witnesses this month, let him fast it.” (cf. Surah al-Baqarah 2:185)

There is no excuse not to grasp the general meaning of the Quran, there are many sources available online, publishing houses to get a Quran with Translation of the Meaning.

Allah (S.W.T.) says in surat Muhammad, (verse 24), what can be translated as, “Do they not then think deeply in the Qur’an, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding)?”

When was the last time, when we picked up the Quran, read the verses and pondered over the words. Many say “We follow the Quran and Sunnah”, but they have no connection with the Quran? How can we say we follow it (the Quran) and know nothing about it? We have to go back to the basics, back to the beginning, which is the Quran.

We should try and make the Quran a part of our every day life, just like how we have made brushing our teeth a part of our daily life and we would never forget to brush our teeth, how about waking up and reading the Quran? Reading even a little is better than not reading it at all.

“However got something, it is better than getting nothing!”

We should set a target to read half a page and read it everyday, and build a connection with the Quran.

The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, said, “The best actions are continuous ones even if little…” [Muslim]

4 ) Prayer - this is just as equally important

“The first matter that the slave will be brought to account for on the Day of Judgment is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound. And if it is bad, then the rest of his deeds will be bad.” [Recorded by al-Tabarani. According to al-Albani, it is sahih. Al-Albani, Sahih al-Jami, vol.1, p. 503.

Those who become religious in Ramadan, and then on the 29th or 30th day they stop praying etc. This is a very bad sign, that your Ramadan was most likely not accepted.

The Ulamah from the past and present, have said for the one who does not pray the 5 daily prayers knowing he must pray and says he does not have to is not considered a Muslim.

"When have finished performing the Salah, remember Allah standing, sitting, and reclining, but when you are free from danger, perform the Salah. Surely, Salah is enjoined on the believers at fixed times." (4:103)

We must not only pray our 5 daily prayers, but pray them on time. Just like we go to work arrive at 9am and leave at 5pm, we take our lunch break 12pm - 1pm, as for prayer we pray whenever we like. We must go back to the basics, and establish the pray on time.

In Ramadan, the night pray has a special virtue and value (although can be prayed any time of the year).

The Prophet Muhammad (s) in Ramadan would lead the people for night prayer after salatul Ishaa for a few days, and then he stopped in fear that this pray would become an obligation upon the Muslims. However, it is from the Sunnah to pray the night prayer in Ramadan to increase in our Ibadah, as we do not know if we will be here next Ramadan.

How many units of prayer do we pray?

The issue is simple and easy, but people have made it difficult and confusing. The people in the past used to pray 41, some 39, some 29, some 13 and 19, and 11 units of pray (i.e. different units).

The Prophet (s) said "The night prayer is offered as two Rakat followed by two Rakat and so on" [Bukharee]

Technically speaking the night prayer has no limit. However, the hadeeth of ‘Aisha: The Prophet -salalahu alaahe wa saleem- never increased in Ramadan, nor outside of Ramadan, more than 11 raka’ats (i.e. 8 of night prayer, and 3 of witr). [Bukharee]

One can say “this is the closest to the Sunnah”; but if people pray 20 like those in Makkah there is nothing wrong with this either (as many Ulamah have said).

What is the history of this?

When Umar revived the Sunnah and re-established praying Tarawih in congregation, at that time they used to pray 100’s of verses, but they were strong in worshipping Allah and kept persevering. Then later on in time, they started praying 23, because he found the people were weak and increased the units of prayer (more units, more movements in pray).

So whether you pray 8 or 20, it is ok. Although 8 is closer to the Sunnah, but if someone prayers more you do not make a big deal out of this.
5 ) Making Suhoor and Iftar

Part take in a meal before Fajr.

“The difference between our observance of the fast and that of the People of the Book is eating of breakfast” (Muslim)

O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you that ye may (learn) self-restraint. Qur’an 2:183-185 Surah Al-Baqarah

We are not the first nation to fast, many before us did too.

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree said that the Messenger (S) said: “Eating the Sahoor is blessed. Do not neglect it even if you take a gulp of water, because Allah and His angels invoke blessings upon those who partake in the pre-dawn meal.” [Ahmad] This will give us energy to worship Allah during the day.

Iftar should be taken straight away, not to delay it.

You should break your fast with dates, if you can’t find dates, to drink water. If you have no food, you should break it by making the intention you have broken your fast then it has.

You find much extravagance in Ramadan

Not only is this is bad from an Islamic point of view, but it makes the women busy with making food, what about their ibadah?
6 ) Giving Zakaat and Charity

What is the connection between Zakaat and Ramadan? In essence, there is no connection, Zakat can be given any time in the year. Many Muslims give Zakat in Ramadan due to the rewards.

“If every Muslim paid their Zakat, there would be no poverty in the world”

Not paying Zakat, is a major sin in Islam.

Abu Bakr waged war on all Muslims who did not pay Zakat.

The Prophet (s) was the most generous person, and was even more so in Ramadan; and would give and give.

In charity in Islam has a wider meaning, than the meaning of just giving money.

One day, the Prophet (s) gathered the companions and asked

“Who began this day fasting?” Abu Bakr said: “I did.” The Prophet (s) said: “Who participated in a funeral procession today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did” Prophet (s) said: “Who fed a needy person today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did” He (s) said: “Who visited a sick person today?” Abu Bakr said: “I did” Then, the Prophet (s) said: “These things cannot all meet in a single person but that they will enter Paradise.” [Saheeh Muslim]

Charity is not just being rich, and giving thousands of money, charity is smiling at your brother, helping others, etc.

“Whoever Allah has given tawfique to, they will never find any shortage of doing good”
7 ) Encouraging your children to fast

Obligations in Islam, like Siyam, Prayer and Hajj are only obligated upon them when they become puberty. Before this age, if they miss their Siyam or Prayer they will not be sinful, but if they are not encouraged before they become puberty how will they be able to fast and prayer, it is a form of training. Responsibility and burden is on the parents to teach your children, if you don’t teach them early then when they grow up they will ask why do I need to fast, why do I need to pray no one else does at school etc. In Muslim countries the children love Ramadan, we should make Ramadan fun for them, take them to Islamic gathering, gatherings with other children, and not to overload them but at the same time ensure we train them.
8 ) Feeding a fasting person

Greatest way of worshipping Allah, to help somebody else.

“The one who shows somebody good, is like the one who does it” Hadith

The Prophet - sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam - said, “Whoever gives a fasting person (food) to break his or her fast, he (the one feeding) will get the reward equivalent to the (fasting persons) reward - without diminishing anything from the reward of the (fasting person).” Hadith

“Wealth is never decreased by giving.”
9 ) Making Umrah in Ramadan

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “Umrah is an expiation for the time between it and the previous ‘Umrah’ and an accepted Hajj has no less a reward than Paradise”. (Narrated by al-Bukhari 1683, Muslim 1349).

“Umrah performed in Ramadan, is the reward of Hajj” Hadith
10 ) Making Dawah

Because we are living in a Kafir Land, when we are fasting people at work ask do you want a tea and coffee; this is an opportunity for da’wah. Somebody asks “Why do you fast?” or if they don’t ask you, you can say you are fasting.

* This is a pillar of Islam
* We as Muslims we worship Allah in many ways; this is another way we worship Him.
* There are many unfortunate than us; it is a time to remember us.
* It is prescribed to those before us, and it is prescribed for us; all religions came with fasting.
* When they talk about worldy stuff, you can say “do you know something amazing; right now 1 billion people on this earth are fasting today!”
* Etc

These are 10 amazing things, mentioned because they are so important, a sister died last night and did not make it for Ramadan, so we must not waste this month if we make it to it.

Before Ramadan the companions would make duaa “O Allah, make it such that we arrive to Ramadan” and when the companions made it to Ramadan, they would then start making duaa “O Allah please accept from us our Ramadan”
Summary

1 ) You must have Ikhlas

2 ) You must have Knowledge

3 ) Renew your link with the Quran, read it

4 ) First establish the 5 daily prayers, the Sunnah prayers, and Tarawih

5 ) Take Sahoor and Iftar (make duaa before the Iftar)

6 ) Give your Zakat, and give general charity

7 ) Encourage your children to fast, start slowly and when they grow older they will understand

8 ) Feed a fasting person

9 ) Make Umrah, go with the intention to earn the reward

10 ) Make Dawah, speak to people, Fasting is not a secret

There are many more things we can do in Ramadan, above are just 10.
Narrated Abu Huraira(r.a): The Prophet said:”… whoever fasts during Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Source: alqamardesigns.wordpress.com

Istanbul

Istanbul

Area: 5.712 km²
Population: 10.018.735 (2000)
Traffic Code: 34

The god and human, nature and art are together in there, they have created such a perfect place that it is valuable to see." Lamartine’s famous poetic line reveals his love for Istanbul, describing the embracing of two continents, with one arm reaching out to Asia and the other to Europe.

Istanbul, once known as the capital of capital cities, has many unique features. It is the only city in the world to straddle two continents, and the only one to have been a capital during two consecutive empires - Christian and Islamic. Once was capital of the Ottoman Empire, Istanbul still remains the commercial, historical and cultural pulse of Turkey, and its beauty lies in its ability to embrace its contradictions. Ancient and modern, religious and secular, Asia and Europe, mystical and earthly all co-exist here.

Its variety is one of İstanbul’s greatest attractions: The ancient mosques, palaces, museums and bazaars reflect its diverse history. The thriving shopping area of Taksim buzzes with life and entertainment. And the serene beauty of the Istanbul strait, Princes Islands and parks bring a touch of peace to the otherwise chaotic metropolis.

Districts

Adalar, Avcılar, Bağcılar, Bahçelievler, Bakırköy, Beşiktaş, Bayrampaşa, Beykoz, Beyoğlu, Eminönü, Eyüb, Fatih, Gaziosmanpaşa, Kadıköy, Kâğıthane, Kartal, Küçükçekmece, Pendik, Sarıyer, Şişli, Ümraniye, Üsküdar, Zeytinburnu, Büyükçekmece, Çatalca, Silivri, Şile, Esenler, Güngören, Maltepe, Sultanbeyli, and Tuzla.

The İstanbul Strait

The Golden Horn

Beyoğlu and Taksim : Beyoğlu is an interesting example of a district with European-influenced architecture, from a century before. Europe’s second oldest subway, Tunel was built by the French in 1875, must be also one of the shortest – offering a one-stop ride to start of Taksim. Near to Tunel is the Galata district, whose Galata Tower became a famous symbols of İstanbul, and the top of which offers a tremendous 180 degree view of the city.

From the Tunel area to Taksim square, is one of the city’s focal points for shopping, entertainment and urban promenading: İstiklal Caddesi is a fine example of the contrasts and compositions of Istanbul; fashion shops, bookshops, cinemas, markets, restaurants and even hand-carts selling trinkets and simit (sesame bread snack) ensure that the street is packed throughout the day until late into the night. The old tramcars re-entered into service, which shuttle up and down this fascinating street, and otherwise the street is entirely pedestrianised. There are old embassy buildings, Galatasaray High School, the colourful ambience of Balık Pazarı (Fish Bazaar) and restaurants in Çiçek Pasaji (Flower Passage). Also on this street is the oldest church in the area, St Mary’s Draperis dating back to 1789, and the Franciscan Church of St Antoine, demolished and then rebuilt in 1913.

The street ends at Taksim Square, a big open plaza, the hub of modern İstanbul and always crowded, crowned with an imposing monument celebrating Ataturk and the War of Independence. The main terminal of the new subway is under the square, adjacent is a noisy bus terminal, and at the north end is the Ataturk Cultural Centre, one of the venues of the Istanbul Theatre Festival. Several five-star hotels are dotted around this area, like the Hyatt, Intercontinental and Hilton (the oldest of its kind in the city). North of the square is the Istanbul Military Museum.

Taksim and Beyoğlu have for centuries been the centre of nightlife, and now there are many lovely bars and clubs off Istiklal Cadesi, including some of the only gay venues in the city. Beyoğlu is also at the centre of the more bohemian arts scene.

Sultanahmet : Many places of tourist interest are concentrated in Sultanahmet, in heart of the Imperial Centre of the Ottoman Empire. The most important places in this area, all of which are described in detail in the “Places of Interest” section, are Topkapı Palace, Aya Sofya, Sultanahmet Mosgue (the Blue Mosque), the Hippodrome, Kapalı Carşı (Covered Market), Yerebatan Sarnıcı and the Museum of Islamic Art.

In addition to this wonderful selection of historical and architectural sites, Sultanahmet also has a large concentration of carpet and souvenir shops, hotels and guesthouses, cafes, bars and restaurants, and travel agents.

Ortaköy : Ortakoy was a resort for the Ottoman rulers because of its attractive location on the Istanbul strait, and is still a popular spot for residents and visitors. The village is within a triangle of a mosque, church and synagogue, and is near çirağan Palace, Kabataş High School, Feriye, Princess Hotel. The name Ortaköy reflects the university students and teachers who would gather to drink tea and discuss life, when it was just a small fishing village. These days, however, that scene has developed into a suburb with an increasing amount of expensive restaurants, bars, shops and a huge market. The fishing, however, lives on and the area is popular with local anglers, and there is now a huge waterfront tea-house which is crammed at weekends and holidays.

Sarıyer : The first sight of Sarıyer is where the İstanbul strait connects with the Black Sea, after the bend in the river after Tarabya. Around this area, old summer houses, embassies and fish restaurants line the river, and a narrow road which separates it from Büyükdere, continues along to the beaches of Kilyos.

Sarıyer and Rumeli Kavağı are the final wharfs along the European side visited by the Istanbul strait boat trips. Both these districts, famous for their fish restaurants along with Anadolu Kavagı, get very crowded at weekends and holidays with Istanbul residents escaping the city.

After these points, the İstanbul strait is lined with tree-covered cliffs and little habitation. The Sadberk Hanım Museum, just before Sariyer, is an interesting place to visit; a collection of archaeological and ethnographic items, housed in two wooden houses. A few kilometres away is the huge Belgrade Forest, once a haunting ground of the Ottomans, and now a popular weekend retreat into the largest forest area in the city.

Üsküdar : Relatively unknown to tourists, the suburb of Üsküdar, on the Asian side of the İstanbul strait, is one of the most attractive suburbs. Religiously conservative in its background, it has a tranquil atmosphere and some fine examples of imperial and domestic architecture.

The iskele, or Mihrimah Mosgue is opposite the main ferry pier, on a high platform with a big covered porch in front, often occupied by older local men watching life around them. Opposite this is Yeni Valide Mosgue, built in 1710, and the Valide Sultan’s green tomb rather like a giant birdcage. The Çinili Mosque takes its name from the beautiful tiles which decorate the interior, and was built in 1640.

Apart from places of religious interest, Üsküdar is also well known as a shopping area, with old market streets selling traditional local products, and a good fleamarket with second hand furniture. There are plenty of good restaurants and cafes with a great views of the İstanbul strait and the rest of the city, along the quayside. In the direction of Haydarpaşa is the Karaca Ahmet Cemetery, which is the largest Muslim graveyard in İstanbul. The front of the Çamlıca hills lie at the ridge of area and also offer great panoramic views of the islands and river.

Kadıköy : Further down to the south along, the İstanbul strait towards the Marmara sea, Kadıköy has developed into a lively area with up-market shopping, eating and entertainment making it popular especially with wealthy locals. Once prominent in the history of Christianity, the 5th century hosted important consul meetings here, but there are few reminders of that age. It is one of the improved districts of İstanbul over the last century, and fashionable area to promenade along the waterfront in the evenings, especially around the marinas and yacht clubs.

Bağdat Caddesi is one of the most trendy – and label-conscious – fashion shopping streets, and for more down-to-earth goods, the Gen Azim Gündüz Caddesi is the best place for clothes, and the bit pazari on Ozelellik Sokak is good for browsing through junk. The Benadam art gallery remains in Moda district with many other foreing cusines, restaurants and cafes.

Haydarpaşa : To the north of Kadikoy is Haydarpasa, and the train station built in 1908 with Prussian-style architecture which was the first stop along the Baghdad railway. Now it is the main station going to eastbound destinations both within Turkey, and international. There are tombs and monuments dedicated to the English and French soldiers who lost their lives during the Crimean War (1854-56), near the military hospital. The north-west wing of the 19th Century Selimiye Barracks once housed the hospital, used by Florence Nightingale to care for soldiers, and remains to honour her memory.

Polonezköy : Polonezköy, although still within the city, is 25 km. away from the centre and not easy to reach by public transport. Translated as “village of the Poles”, the village has a fascinating history: It was established in 1848 by Prince Czartorisky, leader of the Polish nationals who was granted exile in the Ottoman Empire to escape oppression in the Balkans. During his exile, he succeeded in establishing a community of Balkans, which still survives, on the plot of land sold to him by a local monastery.

Since the 1970s the village has become a popular place with local İstanbulites, who buy their pig meat there (pig being forbidden under Islamic law and therefore difficult to get elsewhere). All the Poles have since left the village, and the place is inhabited now by wealthy city people, living in the few remaining Central European style wooden houses with pretty balconies.

What attracts most visitors to Polonezkoy is its vast green expanse, which was designated İstanbul’s first national park, and the walks though forests with streams and wooden bridges. Because of its popularity, it gets crowded at weekends and the hotels are usually full.

Kilyos : Kilyos is the nearest beach resort to the city, on the Black Sea coast on the European side of the İstanbul strait. Once a Greek fishing village, it has quickly been developed as a holiday-home development, and gets very crowded in summer. Because of its ease to get there, 25km and plenty of public transport, it is good for a day trip, and is a popular weekend getaway with plenty of hotels, and a couple of campsites.

Şile : A pleasant, small holiday town, Şile lies 50km from Üsküdar on the Black Sea coast and some people even live there and commute into Istanbul. The white sandy beaches are easily accessible from the main highway, lying on the west, as well as a series of small beaches at the east end. The town itself if perched on a clifftop over looking the bay tiny island. There is an interesting French-built black-and-white striped lighthouse, and 14th century Genoese castle on the nearby island. Apart from its popular beaches, the town is also famous for its craft; Şile bezi, a white muslin fabric a little like cheesecloth, which the local women embroider and sell their products on the street, as well as all over Turkey.

The town has plenty of accommodation available, hotels, guest houses and pensions, although can get very crowded at weekends and holidays as it is very popular with people from İstanbul for a getaway, especially in the summer. There are small restaurants and bars in the town.

Prince’s Islands : Also known as İstanbul Islands, there are eight within one hour from the city, in the Marmara Sea. Boats ply the islands from Sirkeci, Kabataş and Bostancı, with more services during the summer. These islands, on which monasteries were established during the Byzantine period, was a popular summer retreat for palace officials. It is still a popular escape from the city, with wealthier owning summer houses.

Büyükada : The largest and most popular one in Istanbul is Büyükada (the Great Island). Large wooden mansions still remain from the 19th century when wealthy Greek and Armenian bankers built them as a holiday villas. The island has always been a place predominantly inhabited by minorities.

Buyukada has long had a history of people coming here in exile or retreat; its most famous guest being Leon Trotsky, who stayed for four years writing ‘The History of the Russian Revolution’. The monastery of St George also played host to the granddaughter of Empress Irene, and the royal princess Zoe, in 1012.

The island consists of two hills, both surmounted by monasteries, with a valley between. Motor vehicles are banned, so getting around the island can be done by graceful horse and carriage, leaving from the main square off Isa Celebi Sokak. Bicycles can also be hired.

The southern hill, Yule Tepe, is the quieter of the two and also home of St George’s Monastery. It consists of a series of chapels on three levels, the site of which is a building dating back to the 12th century. In Byzantine times it was used as an asylum, with iron rings on the church floors used to restrain patients. On the northern hill is the monastery İsa Tepe, a 19th century house.

The entire island is lively and colourful, with many restaurants, hotels, tea houses and shops. There are very big well-kept houses, trim gardens, and pine groves, as well as plenty of beach and picnic areas.

Burgazada : It is a smaller and less infrastructured for tourists. The famous Turkish novelist, Sait Faik Abasıyanık lived there, and his house has been turned into a museum dedicated to his work, and retains a remarkable tranquil and hallowed atmosphere.

Heybeliada : ‘Island of the Saddlebag’, because of its shape, is loved for its natural beauty and beaches. It also has a highly prestigious and fashionable watersports club in the northwest of the island. One of its best-known landmarks is the Greek Orthodox School of Theology, with an important collection of Byzantine manuscripts. The school sits loftily on the northern hill, but permission is needed to enter, from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Fener. The Deniz Harp Okulu, the Naval High School, is on the east side of the waterfront near the jetty, which was originally the Naval War Academy set up in 1852, then a high school since 1985. Walking and cycling are popular here, plus isolated beaches as well as the public Yöruk Beach, set in a magnificent bay.

There are plenty of good local restaurants and tea houses, especially along Ayyıldız Caddesi, and the atmosphere is one of a close community.

Environment : Wide beaches of Kilyos at European side of Black Sea at 25th km. outside the İstanbul, is attracting İstanbul residents during summer months. Very rarely do we relate these images to married couples.

Moreover, we almost never connect this perception to Muslim couples, who marry according to purely Islamic customs. Although this link is quite rare, there actually exists an example in Islam's own history, which not only depicts this kind of love but goes far beyond it.

This is the pure, married love between the Prophet Muhammad and his beloved, Lady Aishah.

The two came together in circumstances that are a stark contrast to today's conventional love story. He was a devoted Messenger of God, embarking on the third year of prophethood; she was the daughter of his best friend and companion, Abu Bakr.

Infusing Romance

The early years of their marriage began quite innocently. Although Aishah was a young bride, she was in the standard marriageable age that the Arabian culture approved of and encourages at that time. The clear evidence is that Aishah had already been engaged to another man before her engagement to the Prophet.

Though Aishah was ready for marriage life, the Prophet preferred to grant her extra support in her transition to life as a married woman. She carried on with the many joys of childhood and fortunate for her, as she had a husband gentle and kind enough to understand this.

Rather than throwing all the responsibilities of a wife on her at once, the Prophet made the marriage and its duties a gradual process for Aishah and ensured that she made a smooth transition into her new life. The compassionate nature with which he nurtured Aishah in her early years as a wife made a tremendous impact on the strong woman she went on to become.

As the so called "honeymoon period" between the couple came to an end, many challenges and trying moments began to arise. In the midst of all the mayhem, this blessed couple still took time out for simple fun and laughter.

Aishah fondly recalls memories of racing with the Prophet and even winning the race when she was young and fit (Ibn Al Jawzy 68).

They enjoyed these races so much that the couple even raced to the Battle of Badr which was one of the most important battles in the Islamic history.

The romance in this marriage was not limited to just fun and games. As their marriage continued, intimacy was ultimately inter-woven in their daily affairs. They would sit and eat together and Aishah would take a sip and then the Prophet would do so from the same spot her lips touched.

She would have some meat or chicken, and then he would eat from the same spot she ate from. This is just one of many ways they infused romance and affection in even the simplest of acts. These small gestures show that in this marriage, romance was not a superficial bouquet of roses. Rather, it was natural and existed in their everyday life.

Love has several expressions. However, it is known to all and sundry that for a woman, nothing expresses love like the words a man simply speaks from his heart.

The Prophet was most forthcoming in expressing his love for Aishah and this is evident in multiple sayings (hadith) in which he publicly declares that Aishah is the most beloved to him.

Such profound love he held for his wife that he referred to her as one with the complete qualities of a believing woman. This is a clear sign of the kind of respect he held for his wife.

This respect was possible because he actually put forth the time and effort in getting to know and understand his wife enough to recommend her as an example for other women to follow.

Brilliant Student & Great Teacher

A crucial dimension to their equation was the student-teacher relationship they shared. Aishah's enthusiastic and inquisitive nature made her one of the foremost students of the Prophet.

Sent as a teacher to mankind, the Prophet implemented this role most effectively in his very own home. The Islamic virtues and way of life Aishah learned and carried out were essentially through watching the Prophet and keenly observing his behavior and mannerisms.

He led by example and his beloved wife testifies to this in stating that the manners of the prophet were a living example of the Quran. (At-Tirmidhi)

Far from being meek and oppressed, Aishah was a woman of substance who was never afraid to stand up for truth and justice — whether that meant defending herself or her beloved husband. She participated in battles when she was able to and played whatever role she could in supporting the Prophet in his endeavors.

Surviving Hardships

Her quality of being content regardless of circumstances helped her overcome many challenges she faced as the Prophet's wife. There was a time in the Prophet's home, when they had no fire or food for cooking and they simply lived off of dates and water. Yet Aishah went through this hardship and showed the mark of a true companion — one who can offer unrelenting support even under the most trying circumstances.

A truly dynamic woman, complete with the qualities of virtue, intelligence and even possessiveness over her husband — there was something quite distinct about Aishah which drew the Prophet so close to her.

Passing On Her Husband's Legacy

The Prophet and his beloved connected as soul mates, as he received divine revelations often when he was with her. The fact that God blessed and ordained this marriage is evident in that the Prophet confessed to Aishah that before marrying her, he saw her twice in his dreams.

Both times, Angel Gabriel carried her to him in a silk cloth and said to him, that Aishah would be his wife in this world and in the Hereafter (Al-Bukhari). Their blessed companionship came to a peaceful end after nine years, when the Prophet drew his last breath in Aishah's arms.

The Prophet's demise may have ended their companionship in this world. However, it did not put a stop to his mission nor did it end Aishah's role in carrying out her beloved's message.

It was after the Prophet's demise that one can truly see the divine purpose behind this marriage. Because she spent the most formative years of her life with the Prophet, she was able to learn and imbibe all of his teachings.

This became a tremendous asset after the Messenger passed away and was only possible because of Aishah's age. Upon his demise, Aishah's youth gave her the capacity to continue to preach Islam's message for the many years she lived thereafter.

Many companions of the Prophet and new followers of Islam would come to Lady Aishah for advice on various Islamic matters. Her contribution in relating numerous sayings of the Prophet and providing clarification on questions related to faith soon catapulted her to the status of a prominent Islamic scholar.

Aishah's role in this marriage was one that God destined in order to ensure that the teachings of Islam will be successfully transmitted to coming generations even after the Prophet passed away.

The love story between the Prophet Muhammad and Lady Aishah may not be what epic romances are made of, but it certainly provides a more realistic perception of how true love can be found within a marriage.

The sole purpose of marriage in Islam is to fulfill an individual's need for companionship and true love. Islam emphasizes and encourages this fulfillment but only within the bond of marriage.

The Prophet's marriage to Aishah shows that intimacy and romance is not necessarily limited to rosy-eyed young dating couples. This blessed couple exemplified that the true love and companionship we all seek, is entirely possible within marriage and moreover, within the Islamic way of life.

Today, this is a marriage which many may choose to slander or demean. Yet one needs only to take a look at the evidence Prophet Muhammad and Lady Aishah left behind, in the form of numerous sayings they related, which testify so dearly to the love and intimacy they shared.

The most famous love stories in this world are those that were a figment of someone's imagination. Yet this is a love which actually existed. It was a love created and destined by God himself.

Source: julitaleyte.blogspot.com

What is Isra and Lailat al Miraj?

What is Isra and Lailat al Miraj?

Isra and Mi’raj Summary:
MIn Islamic tradition, the Isra and Mi’raj are the two parts of a journey that Muhammad took in one night, in 621 AD (1 BH). Many Muslims consider it a physical journey but some Islamic scholars consider it a dream. A brief sketch of the story is in verses 1 and 60 of one of the Qur’an chapters (#17: sura al isra), and other details were filled in from the supplemental writings, the hadith.

The Isra begins with Muhammad resting in the Kaaba in Mecca, when the archangel Gabriel comes to him, and brings him the winged steed Buraq, who carries Muhammad to the “farthest mosque”. The location of this mosque was not explicitly stated in the Qur’an, but is traditionally considered to be the Noble Sanctuary (Temple Mount) in Jerusalem. There, Muhammad alights, tethers Buraq, and leads other prophets in prayer. He then gets back on Buraq, and in the second part of the journey, the Mi’raj, is taken to the heavens, where he tours the circles of heaven, and speaks with the earlier prophets, and with Allah. Allah tells him to enjoin the Muslims to pray fifty times a day; however, Moses tells Muhammad that they would never do it, and urges Muhammad to go back several times and ask for a reduction, until finally it is reduced to five times a day.

After Muhammad returned to Earth and tells his story in Mecca, the unbelieving townspeople regard it as absurd. Some go to Muhammad’s companion Abu Bakr and tell him, “Look at what your companion is saying. He says he went to Jerusalem and came back in one night.” Abu Bakr in reply, tells them, “If he said that, then he is truthful. I believe him concerning the news of the heavens — that an angel descends to him from the heavens. How could I not believe he went to Jerusalem and came back in a short period of time — when these are on earth?” It was for this that Abu Bakr is said to have received his famous title “Us-Siddiq”, The Truthful.

The story is celebrated each year via a festival primarily for children, the Lailat al Miraj. Muslims bring their children to the mosques, where the children are told the story, allowed to pray with the adults, and then afterwards food and treats are served.

Type of journey:
Many Muslims believe that the Isra and Mi’raj describe a physical journey of Muhammad, but some Islamic scholars consider it as a dream. Ibn Ishaq, author of the first biography of Muhammad, says it was the latter. He has a tradition from Aisha that only Muhammad’s spirit had journeyed to “the distant place of prayer”, although later material written by Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir differ in this opinion. Some argue that the journey was a type of metaphor — a mode of revelation for Muhammad in symbolic form, for the guidance of the Muslim nation. The event could be interpreted as foretelling Muslims that God would now raise Muslims up as a superpower, and Jerusalem would soon fall into their hands. This did happen within less than three decades of this event. Other hadith material suggests that it was a physical journey and it is argued that this event wouldn’t be a “trial” for believers if it were a dream.

The Masjid al-Aqsa, the Farthest Mosque:
Though at the time of the Isra and Mi’raj, there was no mosque in that location, the term “the farthest Mosque” in verse (17:1) of the Qur’an is traditionally interpreted by Muslims as referring to the site at the Noble Sanctuary (Temple Mount) in Jerusalem. This interpretation is agreed with by even the earliest biographer of Muhammad — Ibn Ishaq — and is supported by numerous Hadith. The term used for mosque,”masjid”, literally means “place of prostration”, and includes monotheistic places of worship such as Solomon’s Temple, which in verse 17:7 (in the same sura) is described as a masjid. Some Muslim scholars argue that “the farthest mosque” referred to in the Qur’an actually points to the Temple of Solomon.

Many Western historians, such as Heribert Busse and Neal Robinson, agree that Jerusalem is the originally intended interpretation. However, some disagree, arguing that at the time this verse of the Qur’an was recited (around the year 621, unless one follows Wansbrough) many Muslims understood the phrase “farthest mosque” as a poetic phrase for a mosque already known to them, a mosque in Heaven, or as a metaphor. For the following reasons, they find it unlikely that this verse referred to a location in Palestine: But it is also true that initially Muslims used to pray while facing towards “bait-ul-muqadas” or the Temple Mount or the holy land. Later on this direction, the Qibla, was changed to Mecca. So it would be wrong to say that in that period Muslims had no connection with Palestine.
The modern Al Aqsa mosque, built after Muhammad’s lifetime
The modern Al Aqsa mosque, built after Muhammad’s lifetime

Critics also point out that at the time of Muhammad’s vision, there was no mosque on the Noble Sanctuary in Jerusalem. That structure was not built until after Muhammad’s death, when Muslims finally did conquer and occupy Jerusalem. At that time the Umayyads built a new mosque on the Temple Mount; naming it the Al-Aqsa Mosque or “farthest mosque”. Al Tibawi, a Palestinian historian, argues that this action “gave reality to the figurative name used in the Koran.”

Critics also state that there were already two places that Muslim tradition of that time period called “the farthest mosque”; one was the mosque in Medina, and the other was the mosque in the town of Jirana, which Muhammed is said to have visited in 630.

Modern observance:
This celebrated event in Islam is considered to have taken place before the Hijra and after Muhammad’s visit to the people of Taif. It is considered by some to have happened just over a year before the Hijra, on the 27th of Rajab; but this date is not always recognized. In Shi’a Iran for example, Rajab 27 is the day of Muhammad’s first calling or Mab’as.

The Lailat al Miraj, also known as Shab-e-Miraj in Iran, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, and Miraç Kandili in Turkish, is the Muslim festival celebrating the Isra and Mi’raj. Muslims celebrate this event by offering optional prayers during this night, and in many Muslim countries, by illuminating cities with electric lights and candles. The celebrations around this day tend to focus on children and the young. Children are gathered into a mosque and are told the story of the Isra and Mi’raj. The story usually focuses on how Muhammad’s heart was purified by an archangel (Gabriel) and filled him with knowledge and faith in preparation to enter the seven levels of heaven. After prayer (Salat, where the children can pray with the adults if they wish) food and treats are served.

Qur’an and Hadith:
There is very little in the Qur’an about the event, though the Isra and Mi’raj have been discussed in detail in supplemental traditions to the Qur’an, known as hadith literature. Within the Qur’an itself, there are two verses in chapter 17, which has been named after the Isra, and is called “Chapter Isra” or “Sura al Isra”. In English, the chapter is usually called either “The Night Journey” or “Children of Israel.” There is also some information in Sura An Najm, which some say is related to the Isra and Mi’raj.

The Qur’an:
The Qur’an, chapter 17 (Al-Isra), verse 1:
“Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless,- in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who heareth and seeth (all things).— translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali”

The Qur’an, chapter 17 (Al-Isra), verse 60:
“Behold! We told thee that thy Lord doth encompass mankind round about: We granted the vision which We showed thee, but as a trial for men,- as also the Cursed Tree (mentioned) in the Qur’an: We put terror (and warning) into them, but it only increases their inordinate transgression!— translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali”

The Qur’an, chapter 53 (An-Najm), verse 13 to 18:
“For indeed he saw him at a second descent, Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: Near it is the Garden of Abode. Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest!— translated by Abdullah Yusuf Ali”

www.imuslimz.com
<img width='1'
